Nelson Cardwell
of Granville County, NC, Sumner County, TN and Simpson County, KY
by Rand Cardwell - 16Dec2006
Nelson Cardwell - born between 1794 and 1804 in Granville County, North Carolina.. Nelson was the son of Thomas Cardwell and Mary LNU of Granville County, North Carolina. He is listed a minor (under 21 years of age at the time of his father’s death in 1799) in the 1805 North Carolina Supreme Court Case “Cardwell heirs vs. Brodie”. Nelson is listed, not by name, in the 1800 Granville County, North Carolina census record in the home of his widowed mother, Mary LNU Cardwell. His exact location has not been established in the1810 census, but he might have been living with his older brother, Thomas Cardwell, Jr, as he has not been located in the 1810 census.
Nelson Cardwell served in the War of 1812. He is listed in the Muster Rolls of two different units that were formed in Tennessee. He is listed as a Private under Col. R.C. Napier and Capt. James McMurray.. He is also listed as a Private under Col. William Pipkin and Capt. James Blakemore in the 1st Regiment of West Tennessee Militia. That unit was mustered into service on 20 June 1814 in Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee and served to 27 January 1815. A detailed desciption of this unit’s actions during the war can be viewed by clicking here. Note: Section III contains the account of the unit in which Nelson served. [I have yet to locate any information on the dates of service for the other unit that Nelson served in during the conflict. RC 12/2006] Based on the later record of service, it can be established that Nelson Cardwell was in Tennessee by 20 June 1814. Research is needed on James Cardwell, who is listed in the same unit as Nelson . James is also listed in another unit in which Caleb Cardwell, son of Thomas Cardwell of Grainville), also served. He might be a brother. Additional research is needed.
After returning from the war, Nelson Cardwell is living in Sumner County, Tennessee. His older brother, Thomas Cardwell, Jr., is known to be living in that county by 1815. Nelson Cardwell married Nancy Hughs on 30 November 1816 in Sumner County, Tennessee. The young couple are listed in the 1820 census of that county.
1820 Sumner County, Tennessee census record
Nancy, Nelson’s wife, died sometime before 08 March 1834. Nelson is listed in the minutes of the Willow Grove Methodist Church on that date as a widower. Click here for a copy of that record. He is listed as being remarried to the widow Polly Bennett in 1835 in Sumner County, Tennessee. Polly is listed in the Willow Grove Church record mentioned above, but as married. Nelson is listed in the 1837, 1839 and 1840 Simpson County, Kentucky Tax Lists. Simpson County, Kentucky is the northern border of Sumner County, Tennessee. The next record is one that requires some assumption, but it is fairly strong when examed in detail. The 1840 Simpson County, Kentucky census does not list Nelson Cardwell, but there is a listing for Nelsan Caldwell. By reviewing the Tax Lists of that county, it can be determined that there was no one by the name of Nelsan Caldwell. It is therefore assumed that the 1840 record is referring to Nelson Cardwell.
1840 Simpson County, Kentucky census record
It appears that Nelson Cardwell died between 1840 and 1850. He is not listed in the 1850 census for Simpson County, Kentucky or any other location.
To complicate matters more, the Simpson County, Kentucky Courthouse burned in 1882 and the vast majority of the early records were lost. Only a handfull of 1852 marriage records survived, but there is no Cardwell listed in any of them. Some of the names that are listed on various early Simpson County, Kentucky Tax Lists are Nelson Cardwell, Thomas Cardwell, Douglas Cardwell and Perrin Cardwell. Now, Perrin as a given name is fairly common in the line of Thomas Cardwell and Martha Perrin of Virginia, but I’ve yet to find it in association with any of the known children of Thomas Cardwell of Granville County, North Carolina. Perrin Cardwell is listed in the 1870 Simpson County, Kentucky, but much more research is needed before we can link him to Nelson Cardwell, son of Thomas of Granville. If Perrin is determined to be the son of Nelson, then we’ll have to take a long hard look at how we group Thomas of Granville.
The children of Nelson Cardwell will have to be constructed on little evidence given the lack of records in Simpson County, Kentucky. Remember that this is ongoing research and no claim is made of the accuracy of the information.
The Possible Children of Nelson Cardwell and his two wives
1. Jonathan D. Cardwell - possible - born in March 1818 in Tennessee. Jonathan enlisted in the Mounted Volunteers under Capt. Joseph C. Guild and 2nd Col. 2. Dudley Cardwell - probable - born about 1822 in Sumner County, Tennessee. Dudley is the namesake of his father’s brother. Living on the same page as Dudley in that records is a widow, Margaret Cardwell - born about 1857 in Kentucky - with three Cardwell children. It can be assumed that she is the wife of one of Dudley’s sons. Additional research is needed. Dudley and Elizabeth had the following children:

Thomas Perrin Cardwell died on 24 January 1929 in Atoka County, Oklahoma. His obituary appeared in the 24 January 1929 edition of the Coalgate Record-Register in Coal County, Oklahoma: “T.P. Cardwell Dies Suddenly: Thomas P. Cardwell is dead. He died at an early hour Wednesday morning, death resulting from heart trouble. Mr. Cardwell had been in ailing health for some two weeks, and was known to have been in serious condition, however, when it was learned Wednesday morning that he had died suddenly a few hours before, his many friends were shocked by the sudden passing of one of the most beloved citizens of Coalgate. Mr. Cardwell was one of the early settlers of this section of what is now Oklahoma. He was born in Franklin, Simpson County, Kentucky, on January 14, 1858, and had just reached the 71st milestone in life. He moved to Caddo, Indian Territory, in 1884, and the next year moved to Atoka. Twenty-five years or more ago he came to Coalgate, where he resided since that time. During his long residence in Coalgate he was engaged in a number of lines of work. For years he was the senior member of the firm of Cardwell and Greenan. Later he entered the insurance business, which he was engaged in at the time of his death. In connection with his other duties he found time to serve the people of Coalgate in the capacity of Police Judge, and later as automobile tag agent for Coal County. Mr. Cardwell was an active member of the Methodist church and was always found in his place in church service. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias and also the Elks Lodge. He was married to Miss Mahala Anna Brown at Cedar Hill, Tennessee, on January 27, 1878, fifty-one years ago next Sunday. Mrs. Cardwell died September 30, 1920. He later married Mrs. Nannie Lee Trager, who survives him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons: C. L. Cardwell, of Coalgate, editor of the Coalgate Record-Register; L. V. Cardwell and C. A. Cardwell, both living in Oklahoma City. Two brothers, W. E. Cardwell, of Coalgate, and Nelson Cardwell, of Franklin, Kentucky, and two sisters, Mrs. John Cummings, of Coalgate, and Mrs. Sarah Markham, of Louisville, Kentucky, also survive. There are five grandchildren and several nephews and nieces also surviving him. Mr. Cardwell was one who counted his friends almost by his acquaintances. He was strictly honest and hated all shams and hypocrisies. He was always a square shooter and expected others to be likewise. Coalgate has lost one of its best citizens and one whose place will be hard to fill. He will be missed by all who knew him, for he made the world better for having lived in it.” Next: - In Memory of T.P. Cardwell: “The high esteem in which he was held by his many friends, both in Coalgate and else where, was shown in the many kind offers of help, the countless words of sympathy extended to the bereaved loved ones, and by the large number of beautiful floral offerings at the services yesterday. That his friends remembered him in the last sad rites was clearly shown by these acts of kindness, words of sympathy and the beautiful flowers. There was a beautiful wreath sent by the Twelfth legislature in tribute to our former townsman, sent through respect for his many years of service to the people. There was a goodly size crowd at the church to pay their last tribute to their friends and loved ones. Although the day was one of the worst of the winter, many of them braved the freezing wind to accompany the remains to Atoka where it was laid to rest. Many out of town friends and loved ones attended the services, among them being: Mr. and Mrs. L.V. Cardwell and children of Oklahoma City, C.A. Cardwell and daughters of Oklahoma City, Marguerite McAlester, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Moser of Weleetka, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Lindamood and daughter of Atoka, and Walter E. Jacobs, Coal county representatives, who came as a member of the legislative committee, which voted resolutions of sympathy and sent Mr. Jacobs with the resolutions. The two other members were unable to attend on account of a death in one of their families and illness of the other. Truly Coalgate and Coal County has lost one of its best citizens. We had learned to love him and will miss his cheery smile and good-natured greeting each morning. He was always in good spirits and it was good to know a man like Mr. Cardwell. ~ By a Friend. He is listed as a Miner in that record living with Thomas Hopkins of Missouri. He might be listed in the 1880 Tulare County, California census. In that record in his married to Lida LNU (possible Coon). This information is added for research purposes only. The children are listed as being born in Iowa. This does not fit and may indicate a different line.Another point of interest is that there was a Robert Cardwell (middle initial given as “B.”) that served in the War with Mexico. He enlisted on 20 September 1847 in Sumner County, Tennessee at the age of 18. That fits the year of birth for the R.G. Cardwell in California. He married Elizabeth LNU in about 1863. She was born about 1841 in Kentucky. They are living among several Lightfoot families in the 1870 Allen County, Kentucky census and this may reflect Elizabeth’s family. More research is needed. ________________________________________________________
Given the lack of documentation in Simpson County, Kentucky, we will use the 1840 census that lists Nelson Cardwell and fill-in the possible children in that record. This is for research purposes only.
1840 Simpson County, Kentucky census record - Constructed Family of Nelson Cardwell. This is added for research purposes only. More research is needed to establish the family of Nelson Cardwell. There is the possibility that some of the Cardwells that are living in later Simpson County, Kentucky census records are not connected to him. Given the fact that Nelson had a documented brother by the name of Dudley, it is a strong assumption that Dudley Cardwell of Simpson County, Kentucky is his son. Thomas Cardwell of Simpson County is another story. The use of the given name of Perrin just does not fit into the Thomas Cardwell of Granville County, North Carolina lines, of which Nelson Cardwell does belong. This information is one of the current puzzles in the overall Cardwell family. A possibility is that Thomas of Simpson County, Kentucky might be connected to the Cardwell families that are listed in the White County, Tennessee area. That branch is connected to the lines that historically use the given name of Perrin. White County is fairly geograhically close to Simpson County, Kentucky and there are several unaccounted for descendants of that family group. More researh is needed on the Simpson County, Kentucky branch.
Samuel Cardwell, listed as a possible son, is not listed in the above construction. He was born in about 1844 and could not have been listed in the 1840 Simpson County, Kentucky census. If Samuel is his son, then Nelson Cardwell’s approximate death occured between 1844 and 1850.
