THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS - Do not accept it as fact. There are still a lot of unanswered questions. Thanks - Rand Cardwell

Caroline Matilda Cardwell was born about 1836 in Grainger County, Tennessee. She grew up there until her father, Richard M. Cardwell, decided to move the family to Rockingham County, North Carolina in about 1847. She was about eleven years old at that time. Her father died when she was fourteen in 1850. She, along with her younger siblings, were placed under the care of Roadman Harrell, the husband of her sister, in Grainger County, Tennessee on November 2, 1852. Caroline Matilda Cardwell married Albert Reddick on August 1, 1857 in Grainger County, Tennessee, but that is where things got difficult.

Caroline Matilda adopts her maiden name of Cardwell sometime between 1860 and 1870. Verbal family history in her line states that she was married to Albert E. Cardwell. That he was a Confederate soldier who was captured and later died in a Union Prisoner of War Camp. Research indicated that an A.E. Cardwell was buried at the Camp Douglas Union Prisoner of War Camp in Illinois. Investigation revealed that that man was Achilles E. Cardwell, son of William Sands Cardwell of Giles County, Tennessee. (See John Cardwell 1715-1795 , by this author, for details on that line.) Achilles E. Cardwell was born in about 1842 and lived in a county on the other side of the state! The only link that I can find that would have led to this being passed down in that family deals with William T. Cardwell, the younger brother of Caroline Matilda Cardwell. William T. Cardwell enlisted in the Confederate Army with his brother, James R. Cardwell, in Grainger County, Tennessee. William T. Cardwell was sent with his unit to Fort Donalson in West Tennessee and was captured when it was surrendered to the Union Army in 1862. Achilles E. Cardwell was sent to the same location and was also captured. They both, with thousand of other Confederate soldiers, were sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois. Achilles E. Cardwell died there on September 4, 1862. William T. Cardwell, the brother of Caroline Matilda, died there on May 4, 1862. It is theorized that is how the knowledge of the mysterious A.E. Cardwell became known to Caroline Matilda, but that is a mystery in itself.

It is possible that the marriage to Alfred Reddick failed or that he died during the Civil War, but it is clear Caroline Matilda Cardwell, or some of her children, invented the story about A.E. Cardwell. It is known that Reddick was captured (click here for a transcript of Albert Reddick's Civil War records), but details of why he never returned to Caroline Matilda Cardwell are not known. It appears that Caroline Matilda Cardwell had several children that appear to have been born out of wedlock. It is theorized that was the reason for the tall tale, but again it will have to remain a mystery.

She is listed in the 1880 Grainger County, Tennessee census with three children and two grandchildren in her home. Matilda is listed in the home of her son, William Henderson Cardwell, in the 1900 Glaze, Miller County, Missouri census record.

Caroline Matilda Cardwell is attributed with five children, which all carried the Cardwell name. They were Richard Ivan Cardwell, William Henderson Cardwell, Florence Cardwell, James Lafayette Cardwell and Sidney Albert Johnston Cardwell. Caroline Matilda Cardwell is listed as a “Cardwell” in the 1870 Census of Grainger County, Tennessee. According to modern descendants of James Lafayette “Fate” Cardwell, he stated, “that his real name was Red-something.” Richard Ivan Cardwell told his children that James Lafayette “Lafe” Cardwell was his half-brother. Kay Cardwell Davis, a descendant of Caroline Matilda Cardwell, stated that, “I think that some of the old "stories" about her being married to Albert E. Cardwell are from older family members that aren't quite so open minded as we are today. There is no documentation to support that theory... period. I chased my tail for a long time before I finally saw the light.” Regardless, the family of Caroline Matilda Cardwell who settled in Miller County, Missouri, can claim connection to the Cardwell family of Richard M. Cardwell.
