“THE BAMA BOYS” - Cardwell Families in the 1850 Alabama Census and Additional Research
by Rand Cardwell ~ Novemeber 2006 - Updated 3/2008
This article contains information about all Cardwell families in Alabama other than the lines of Peter Cardwell in Pike and Coffee Counties and James Cardwell in Tuscaloosa County. I will include those lines in the near future. There are no other known Cardwells in the 1850 census other than those mentioned above and listed below. If you are connected to any of these families please contact the Cardwell Family Research Center with your information. There is a need for some serious research on the Alabama lines of the family. I’ve been attempting to place them into family groups, but need some assistance. If you are interested in helping with this research please contact me. From a cursory examination, the families listed below appear to link to Simon Cardwell of Georgia, but more research is needed. Watch for an upcoming article on Simon Cardwell of Georgia. 1824 –
Chambers County, Alabama
John Cardwell - born about 1824 in Georgia. He is found in the 1850 census of Chamber County, Alabama. He was married to Nancy LNU in about 1846. He is the probably brother of James Cardwell of Chambers County, Alabama and Thomas Cardwell of Marshall County, Alabama. John is listed in the 1860 census of Chambers County, Alabama with a wife named Lucinda LNU. She was born about 1836 in Georgia. She was probably a Dickson prior to her marriage to John. There is an Andrew Dickson - born about 1840 in Alabama, that is living with them in the 1860 census record. Lucinda is living with a Dickson family in the 1870 Chambers County, Alabama census. John Cardwell enlisted as a Private in Capt. Jefferson Falkner’s Company of Alabama Cavalry, CSA (Chambers Cavalry) on 25 Jul 1861 in Chambers County, Alabama. This unit was later designated as the 8th Regiment of Conderfate Cavalry, CSA. He was 38 years old at the time of enlistment and reported with a horse and weapon of his own. It appears that John died during that conflict as his widow is listed in the 1870 census. John Cardwell was the father of the following children:

James Cardwell
1807 to 1888
Chambers & Tallapoosa Counties, Alabama
James Cardwell was born about 1807 in Georgia. He married Melissa Bohannon on November 18, 1831 in Carroll County, Georgia. James Cardwell is listed in the 1840 Census of Chambers County, Alabama. (James Cardwell – page 221: 200001-0000001). He is living next to Levi Bohannon, Ansel Cardwell and Moses Weldon. The association with Levi Bohannon on this census supports that this is the James Cardwell that married Melissa Bohannon in Carroll County, Georgia. He is the probable brother of Thomas Cardwell of Marshall County, Alabama and John Cardwell of Chambers County, Alabama. Thomas Cardwell is the only other male Cardwell that married in Carroll County, Georgia. John Cardwell is associated due to location. The children are based on the 1840 census of Chambers County, Alabama and the 1850 census of Chambers County, Alabama. James Cardwell is listed in the 1870 and 1880 census of Tallapoosa County, Alabama. He is seventy-four years old and has apparently remarried to Sarah E. LNU. Sarah E. Marshall County, Alabama
Thomas Cardwell was born about 1806 in Virginia. He married Mary D. Long on August 30, 1828 in Carroll County, Georgia. She was born about 1813 in Georgia. Thomas Cardwell is the possible brother of James Cardwell of Chambers County, Alabama. James Cardwell is the only other male Cardwell known to have married in Carroll County, Georgia. He might be a different line that the sons of Simon Cardwell. Thomas is listed as being born in Virginia. This is odd when all the other probable sons of Simon state they were born in Georgia with the exception being John. John Cardwell states that he was born in South Carolina. According to the states of birth of their children, it appears that the family moved from Georgia to Alabama between 1832 and 1834. Mary is listed in the 1860 Marshall County, Alabama census and appears to have been widowed by that date. Thomas and Mary had the following children:
1. Joshiah P. Cardwell – married Jane McCready on March 6, 1845 in Marshall County, Alabama.

“Unknown First Name” Cardwell
? to 1843
Jefferson County, Alabama
Unknown Cardwell appears to have died by the 1850 Census of Jefferson County, Alabama. His widow, Elizabeth Cardwell, is listed as the head of household. She was born about 1822 in Georgia. Elizabeth Cardwell is living next to M.W. Jenkins and Wade Parsons on the 1850 Jefferson County, Alabama census. It appears that Elizabeth Cardwell appears to have remarried to William Brown on December 8, 1850 in Jefferson County, Alabama. There is a strong possibility that this was Simon Cardwell who married Elizabeth Combs on December 6, 1837 in Troup County, Georgia. Additional research is needed. The Unknown Cardwell man and Elizabeth had the following children:
1. James M. Cardwell – born about 1839 in Georgia according to the 1850 Jefferson County, Alabama census. He enlisted as a Private in Company G of the 18th Alabama Infantry, CSA during the Civil War on July 29, 1861 at Jonesboro, Jefferson County, Alabama. According to those records he was born on May 6, 1832 in Heard County, Georgia. (Heard County neighbors Carroll and Troup). James M. Cardwell was 5’10” tall and had black hair. He was slightly wounded at the Battle of Shiloh and was discharged on July 5, 1862. He married Sandal Missouri Downs. She was the daughter of William J. Downs and Mary Ann Rebecca Burkhalter. Sandal was born on August 18, 1839 and died on November 12, 1909. James M. Cardwell died on March 29, 1904 and is buried in Jefferson County, Alabama.

Sarah Cardwell, his widow, is listed as the head of household in the 1860 Census. John Cardwell is listed in Troup County, Georgia in the 1830 Census. John Franklin Cardwell
1800 - September 1, 1877
Talladega County, Alabama
John Franklin Cardwell was born in 1800 in either South or North Carolina. John Cardwell served in the War of 1812 from 1814 to 1815. He served again during the Indian Wars of 1818 and 1836. According to his Pension Application Records he lived in Talladega County, Alabama in 1850 and 1853. He later resided in Shelby County, Alabama in 1871 and 1872. He married Phebe Gosden on December 24, 1816 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. He moved to Troup County, Georgia before the 1830 census after winning land during the Georgia Land Lottery. This section of Georgia was land that was purchased from the Creek Indians in 1827. During the Land Lottery he is listed as living in Henry County, Georgia. (John Cardwell – 1830 Troup County, Georgia: 22001-20101). The children of John Franklin Cardwell and Phebe Gosden are based on the 1830 Troup County, Georgia census. Phebe Gosden Cardwell appears to have died in about 1832 or 33. John F. Cardwell appears to have remarried to Martha “Patsey” Ford on December 22, 1833 in Troup County, Georgia. It appears that Martha Ford Cardwell had died by the 1840 Talladega County, Alabama census. (John Cardwell – Talladega County, Alabama: 121001-111). In the 1850 census of Talladega County, Alabama he appears to be remarried to Mary (Last Name Unknown). He is associated with William Cardwell of neighboring Coosa County, Alabama by being one of only three male Cardwells to wed in Troup County, Georgia.
Considering that John Franklin Cardwell appears to have had three different wives it is possible that some of his children were living with relatives in the 1850 census. This is supported by the fact that there were several Cardwells that married in neighboring Shelby County, Alabama in the 1850s. If Martha “Patsey” Ford died in about 1839, as theorized, then some of her children might have been “taken in” by members of her family for support. There are several Fords that were living in the general area during the 1840s and 1850s. Additional research is needed, but they might have been living with members of the Ford family. John Franklin Cardwell died on September 1, 1877 in Shelby County, Alabama.
The Children of John Franklin Cardwell and Phebe Gosden
1. Mary Cardwell – probable - born between 1815 and 1820 in Georgia according to the 1830 census of Troup County, Georgia in the home of John Cardwell. She is NOT listed in the 1840 census of Talladega County, Alabama with John Cardwell. She married George W. Veasy on January 3, 1839 in Troup County, Georgia. No additional information.
2. Simon Cardwell – probable - born between 1820 and 1825 in Georgia according to the 1830 census of Troup County, Georgia in the home of John Cardwell. He is NOT listed in the 1840 census of Talladega County, Alabama with John Cardwell. He is too young to have been the John Cardwell that married Martha “Patsey” Cardwell in 1833 in Troup County, Georgia. Simon Cardwell married Elizabeth Combs on December 6, 1837 in Troup County, Georgia. It is possible that this marriage was Simon Cardwell, father of John Franklin Cardwell, remarrying later in life after the death of his unknown wife. It is this compiler’s opinion that that is very unlikely. Simon Cardwell, father of John Franklin Cardwell, is last found in about 1827 when he was involved in the Georgia Land Lottery. He is not mentioned in the 1830 census of Troup County, Georgia, but John Franklin Cardwell is listed with a son that could possibly be this Simon. He might be the unknown Cardwell man that has apparently died by the 1850 census in Jefferson County, Alabama. Elizabeth Cardwell is listed as the head of household with several small children. More research is needed.
3. Lumpkin Cardwell – probable -born between 1820 and 1825 in Georgia according to the 1830 census of Troup County, Georgia in the home of John Cardwell. He is NOT listed in the 1840 census of Talladega County, Alabama with John Cardwell. He is too young to have been the John Cardwell that married Martha “Patsey” Cardwell in 1833 in Troup County, Georgia. Lumpkin Cardwell was born about 1827 according to the 1850 census of Talladega County, Alabama. He is listed in the home of Silas Parrigus as an apprentice. No additional information.
4. Unknown daughter – born between 1825 and 1830 in Georgia according to the 1830 census of Troup County, Georgia in the home of John Cardwell. She is listed in the 1840 census of Talladega County, Alabama in the home of John Cardwell.
5. Unknown daughter – born between 1825 and 1830 in Georgia according to the 1830 census of Troup County, Georgia in the home of John Cardwell. She appears to have died or married by the 1840 census of Talladega County, Alabama. She is NOT listed in the home of John Cardwell.
6. Unknown son – born between 1825 and 1830 in Georgia according to the 1830 census of Troup County, Georgia in the home of John Cardwell. He is listed in the 1840 census of Talladega County, Alabama in the home of John Cardwell. He might be Stephen Cardwell that served in Company C of the 60th Georgia, CSA. He dies at the Exchange Hotel, which was a makeshift hospital, in Gordonsville, Virginia as results of war injuries in November 1862.
7. Benjamin Cardwell – possible - born between 1825 and 1830 in Georgia according to the 1830 census of Troup County, Georgia in the home of John Cardwell. He is NOT listed in the 1840 census of Talladega County, Alabama. He appears to have served as a Sergeant in Ben Sawyer’s Company of Alabama Infantry, CSA during the Civil War. There is no other known record of Benjamin Cardwell. He is associated with Reuben Cardwell, who served in the same unit. Both were from Shelby County, Alabama. Benjamin Cardwell married Sarah A. Brigman on March 7, 1851 in Montgomery, Alabama. She was born about 1835 in South Carolina. They are listed in the 1860 Shelby County, Alabama census records. Benjamin and Sarah had the following children:
i. Alice J. Cardwell - born about 1854 in Alabama. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1860 Shelby County, Alabama census records.
8. Reuben Cardwell – possible - born between 1830 and 1835 according to the 1840 census of Talladega County, Alabama. He might be the son of John Cardwell’s second wife, Martha “Patsey” Ford. Reuben Cardwell enlisted as a Private in Ben Sawyer's Company of Alabama Infantry, CSA during the Civil War. According to those records he was born on November 13, 1833 in Troup County, Georgia. Reuben Cardwell died at Columbus, Kentucky during the war. No additional information.
9. Ferby Cardwell – born on August 11, 1834 in Randolph County, Alabama. She born between 1830 and 1835 according to the 1840 census of Talladega County, Alabama. Her name indicates that she might be the last child born to Phebe Gosden Cardwell. She is not listed in the 1830 Troup County, Georgia census, but according to her age in the 1850 Talladega County, Alabama census she was born in 1832. She is probably the last child that was born to Phebe Gosden before her death in about 1832 or 33 in Troup County, Georgia. She married William Washington Culpepper on December 23, 1855 in Chambers County, Alabama. She died on November 18, 1911 in Marshall County, Alabama. They had the following children:

The Children of John Franklin Cardwell and Martha Ford
10. Bart Cardwell – probable - born between 1830 and 1835 according to the 1840 census of Talladega County, Alabama. He might be the son of John Cardwell’s second wife, Martha “Patsey” Ford. Bart Cardwell is found in the 1860 census of Bibb County, Alabama. He is NOT found in the 1850 census of Talladega County, Alabama in the home of his father, John Franklin Cardwell. It is theorized that he was living with relatives of his probable mother, Martha “Patsey” Ford Cardwell that died in about 1839. It appears that John F. Cardwell remarried in about 1843 to Mary (Last Name Unknown). With several small children to care for during the interim between 1839 and 1843 it is highly probable that Martha’s family may have “taken in” some of the younger children of that marriage. John Cardwell is living next door to Bartholomew Ford in the 1840 census of Talladega County, Alabama. Considering that John Cardwell appears to married Martha “Patsey” Ford in 1833 in Troup County, Georgia it is fairly safe to make the assumption that Bart Cardwell was named after Bartholomew Ford. Considering the naming trends of naming children after members of the wives family it is possible. Bart Cardwell married Mary E. Card on May 12, 1858 in Shelby County, Alabama. There were two other children of John F. Cardwell that married in that County within a couple of years of that time. Mary E. Cardwell was born about 1835 in Alabama. There are two additional Cardwells living with Bart Cardwell in the 1860 census of Bibb County, Alabama. Jane Cardwell born about 1845 and William Cardwell born about 1849. They are too old to be the children of Bart and Mary, but might be either half-siblings or cousins. Additional research is needed. Bart Cardwell is listed in the 1870 census of Shelby County, Alabama with John Cardwell, age 69, living in his home. This link is the basis of the assumption that Bart is his child. There appears to be no other Cardwell men in the Talladega County area that could be the father of Bart, and the theorized use of the name of a probable relative of his mother, it is fairly likely that he is the son of John Franklin Cardwell. Bart Cardwell and Mary E. Card had the following children:
i. Mary M. Cardwell – born about 1859 in Shelby or Bibb County, Alabama. She is listed in the 1860 census of Bibb County, Alabama in the home of Bart Cardwell. In 1870 she is listed again in the home of Bart Cardwell, but in Shelby County, Alabama.
ii. Reuben J. Cardwell – male - born about 1861 in Alabama. He is listed in the 1870 census of Shelby County, Alabama in the home of Bart Cardwell.
iii. Thomas B. Cardwell – male - born about 1863 in Alabama. He is listed in the 1870 and 1880 census of Shelby County, Alabama in the home of Bart Cardwell.
iv. John E. Cardwell – male – born about 1865 in Alabama. He is listed in the 1870 and 1880 census of Shelby County, Alabama in the home of Bart Cardwell.
v. Jasper W. Cardwell – male – born about 1867 in Alabama. He is listed in the 1870 and 1880 census of Shelby County, Alabama in the home of Bart Cardwell.
vi. Monroe Cardwell – born about 1869 in Shelby County, Alabama. He is listed in the 1880 census of Shelby County, Alabama in the home of Bart Cardwell.
vii. James D. Cardwell – born about 1873 in Shelby County, Alabama. He is listed in the 1880 census of Shelby County, Alabama in the home of Bart Cardwell.
viii. Bartley Cardwell – born about 1878 in Shelby County, Alabama. He is listed in the 1880 census of Shelby County, Alabama in the home of Bart Cardwell.
11. Martha Jane Cardwell – born between 1835 and 1840 according to the 1840 Talladega County, Alabama census. Jane Cardwell is listed in the 1850 census of Talladega County, Alabama as being born in about 1837 in Georgia. It is this compiler’s opinion that her name was Martha Jane Cardwell. She married Samuel Green on October 5, 1856 in Shelby County, Alabama. No additional information.
12. Simon Cardwell – born between 1835 and 1840 according to the 1840 Talladega County, Alabama census. He is listed in the 1850 census of Talladega County, Alabama in the home of John Cardwell. In that record he is listed as being born about 1839 in Georgia. Simon Cardwell married Mary Francis Helton on December 26, 1860 in Shelby County, Alabama. It is possible that John’s older son named Simon had died and that he named a younger son the same name. I have found this to occur in a couple of other lines, but it is rare. Simon is listed in the home of his widowed father in the 1860 Shelby County, Alabama census records with his wife, Mary Francis Helton. More research is needed.
The Children of John Franklin Cardwell and Mary (Last Name Unknown)
13. Sarah Cardwell – born about 1844 in Talladega County, Alabama according to the 1850 census. Given the big break in the birth years of the children, 1839 to 1844 might indicate that John Cardwell’s second wife, Martha Ford, had died in 1839. This is supported by the fact that there is not wife listed with him in the 1840 Talladega County, Alabama census. It appears that John Cardwell remarried a third time to Mary (Last Name Unknown) in about 1843 in Talladega County, Alabama. She is listed in the home of her widowed father in the 1860 Shelby County, Alaba,a census records. Additional research is needed.
14. Henry C. Cardwell – born January 8, 1846 in Talladega County, Alabama. Henry is listed in the home of his widowed father in the 1860 Shelby County, Alabama census records. He married Martha A. Strong in about 1868. Martha was born in January 1847 in Alabama. They moved to Shelby County, Alabama near Spring Creek. It appears that Henry served in the CSA during the Civil War. Records indicate that he served with Company H Infantry and was captured. He was held for sixty days as Ship Island POW camp and then paroled. (Shelby County, Alabama Pension Book 3).. The couple are listed in the 1870 Bibb County, Alabama census records, but with no children. They are listed in the 1900 Spring Creek, Shelby County, Alabama census records. They had the following children:
i. Ralph Cardwell – birth date unknown. He married Elizabeth Loyed on December 20, 1903 in Shelby County, Alabama. Elizabeth Loyd was born on September 3, 1883 in Alabama. She died on November 16, 1923 in Shelby County, Alabama and is buried at the Spring Creek Cemetery.
ii. Oney Cardwell – born about 1876 in Coosa County, Alabama. No additional information.
iii. Florence Cardwell – born about 1880 in Coosa County, Alabama. She married a Mr. Garrett. No additional information.
iv. Benjamin Cardwell – born in April 1887 in Coosa County, Alabama. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1900 Spring Creek, Shelby County, Alabama census records. No additional information.
15. William Cardwell – born about 1847 in Talladega County, Alabama. He is listed in the home of his widowed father in the 1860 Shelby County, Alabama census records.
16. Malinda Cardwell – born about 1849/50 in Talladega County, Alabama. She is listed in the home of her widowed father in the 1860 Shelby County, Alabama census records.
